FN-resolution om Burma
24. januar 2003
20.11.02 National Coalition Government of the Union of Burma Press release:
NCGUB Hails UN Resolution, Urges International Community to Act
The 57th session of the United Nations General Assembly, which discussed "human rights situation" in Burma, has adopted the resolution on Burma by consensus on 19 November.
The UN General Assembly, among others, voiced its concerns over "ongoing systematic violations of human rights" in Burma and "strongly urged" the Burmese generals "to restore democracy and implement the results of the 1990 elections.”
The National Coalition Government of the Union of Burma (NCGUB) welcomes the resolution passed by the world community and its call on the generals "to ensure that the contacts with Aung San Suu Kyi and other leaders of the National League for Democracy (NLD) move without delay into substantive and structured dialogue towards democratization and national reconciliation.”
The generals promised Mr. Razali Ismail, a special envoy appointed by the UN Secretary General Kofi Anan, in August this year that the talks with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi would "take place very soon."
But the generals' promise had proven to be false, and Mr. Razali recently said "... In my understanding, 'very soon' would be like a couple of weeks or three to four weeks. It has been more than that.”
The generals evidently need to change their attitude. They should stop making empty promises to deceive the international community and give up their ambition to continue controlling the country without entering into a political dialogue with the NLD. They should show more concern for the socioeconomic problems that the people are facing daily and stop thinking about prolonging military rule.
Prime Minister Dr. Sein Win said, "The political deadlock in Burma needs to be overcome urgently. The generals must contribute positively to resolving national problems together with the NLD and other political entities in the country. The international community must also act decisively to dissuade the generals from ignoring the wishes of the Burmese people as expressed in the 1990 elections and from defying the will of the world nations as stated in successive UNGA resolutions.
The NCGUB appreciates the efforts of United Nations Secretary General and his special envoy Mr. Razali Ismail to bring democracy and national reconciliation to Burma and urges the international community to act concertedly in setting time frames and benchmarks for the generals to abide by and ensure democratization efforts in Burma progress according to expectations.
