Burma: SPDC bør holde sine løfter

27. maj 2003

MEDIA RELEASE 27 May 2003 SPDC YET TO HONOUR THE 1990 GENERAL ELECTION RESULT
The Members of Parliament Union (MPU-Burma) calls on the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) to honor the results of the 1990 general elections and release 1,300 political prisoners including 19 elected representatives immediately and unconditionally.

Today marks the 13th anniversary of the 1990 general elections, in which the National League for Democracy (NLD) led by Nobel laureate Daw Aung San Suu Kyi won a landslide victory. Instead of taking steps to transfer power to the NLD and convene the People’s Parliament with members of parliament (MP), the regime effectively cracked down on the NLD, arrested over two hundred MPs and convened the state-orchestrated national Convention with the purpose of nullifying the election results.

Thirteen years after the general elections, the regime still refuses to honor the election results. Despite some positive gestures such as the release of some political prisoners at a very slow pace and the off and on secret talks with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi since October 2000, no tangible results have been seen.

- Over 1,300 dissidents including 19 MPs still remain in prison. - Arbitrary arrest of dissidents is continuing.
- Forced labor with its attendant human rights abuses (particularly in areas of ethnic nationality) continue unabated.
- Intimidations on Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and NLD leaders during their trips outside Rangoon are also continuing.

These indicate that the regime has no real commitment to improving human rights or honoring the 1990 election results. Due to continued repressive rule and economic mismanagement of the regime, politically, economically and socially Burma is heading rapidly towards a crisis.

MPU President and elected MP Teddy Buri said, “Dishonoring the election results is an insult to the people of Burma who had voted in favor of democratic government and People’s Parliament. The regime is using the release of some political prisoners and the possibility of talks as a showcase to ease international pressure. By giving a little, the regime hopes to gain legitimacy, have sanctions lifted, attract resources, consolidate its shaky position and nullify the election results. But it will, in no way, be able to hoodwink the people of Burma or the international community”.

“We strongly condemn the recent arrests of dozens of dissidents including U Win Myint Aung, NLD MP for Dee-Pe-Yin constituency-2. We demand the unconditional release of all political prisoners. We also reiterate our call on the military regime to enter into meaningful talks with the NLD led by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and ethnic nationalities for a negotiated political settlement. We call upon the international community to take concerted and coordinated actions against the regime to honor the election results and bring about a democratic change in Burma”, said Teddy Buri.

The MPU reiterates its pledge that it will never ignore the will of the people expressed in the 1990 elections, and support and facilitate the implementation of the 1990 election results by the National League for Democracy and the other election-winning parties.
